6 things that you should consider
They are the patron saint of cyclists: mudguards. If the heavens open, they will protect you from the worst of the damage – and the rider behind you will not get soaked either.
Finding the right mudguard is not that easy. They are available in plastic or metal, as a fixed or clip-on version and in different lengths, widths, shapes and colours. Oh my days! Who should have a look? In our blog we will give you 6 important factors to consider before you buy.
1. Bike type
A mountain bike, racing bike or city bike – each bike has different characteristics that affect the choice of suitable mudguards. What is the geometry of your bike? Are there already pre-drilled holes or brackets for mudguards? A luggage rack also has a significant influence on the choice of mudguards. The width of the suspension fork is also important as it predetermines the available space between the tyre and the fork for the front mudguard.

2. Terrain
The surface and the associated degree of vibrations are important factors as to how stable or flexible mudguards and mountings must be. 3. Wheel size and tyre width

The width should be 1 centimetre larger than the tyre (about 0.5 centimetres on each side) and the distance between the tyre and mudguard should be about 1.5 centimetres.

4. Mounting method
You want to be able to remove your mudguards quickly and easily in good weather – without any tools? Then you can use mudguards that are attached using rubber straps or hook and loop fasteners and are not screwed on. At the same time, there are also solutions using so-called clamps, which virtually replace the required pre-drilled holes and therefore enable the mounting of mudguards that are screwed on tightly.

5. Brake
There are not many options here: rim or disc brakes. A word of caution here: some mudguards are not suitable for both types of brake. If you’re not sure, take your bike with you when you buy the mudguards and get advice from your trusted bicycle dealer.

Mudguards may not make your bike look better, but make your cycling more enjoyable. 😉 Some mudguards can be integrated perfectly on the bicycle so that the bike and mudguards form a single unit – in the fight against water and mud.
